Green Edge Systems, a Woodland Hills, Calif.-based provider of technology solutions for K-12 school food services, has introduced the Epicure Digital K-12 Digital Menu Board System with nutritional labeling to support the recently published recommendations of the Childhood Obesity Task Force for solving the problem of childhood obesity.
The Epicure Digital K-12 Menu System is a complete digital signage solution with tools that let school cafeteria operators control their menu boards easily and quickly over the Internet. The system displays menus, nutritional information, images, video, animation, food photography, text announcements and text alerts. Each menu board can be programmed by day part and menu cycle. According to the company, menu items, descriptions and prices can be changed easily, quickly and online in one or more locations.
Epicure Digital Systems pioneered the display of nutritional information on digital menu boards in 2003 for the U.S. Navy. Every menu item description includes the portion size, number of calories, grams of fat, amount of cholesterol and a “red heart” icon beside menu items when the item “meets healthy Navy option standards.”
The Beverly Hills, Calif.-based company, which describes its approach to menu boards as “The Cure for the Menu Bored,” applies the same menu board knowhow to its K-12 Digital Menu Board System as it does to other food service digital signage. Menu boards in K-12 school cafeterias communicate with students just when they are selecting their food, thereby helping educate students to make healthier food choices.
